Accessibility!

The Stoney Hill Road House was designed for a disabled person.  First and foremost, this is a wheelchair accessible environment in all respects.  The parking, entry walkways, patios and door thresholds are all at the same level so transitions between the inside and outside of the house are barrier free.  This design feature was made possible by introducing a "moat" of gravel between the house foundation and the concrete walkways which is bridged by wooden platforms which run above the gravel to the doorways allowing water to drain through the decking without running into the house.

Inside the house, there are accessible bathrooms with roll in showers on both floors.  In addition, openings have been left underneath some sinks and the cooktop to enable wheelchair access for cooking and dishwashing, if desired.  All rooms and hallways are oversized to allow ample space.  Floors are wood, tile or concrete.  There is an elevator available for handicap access to the lower level and there is a Generac generator for emergency power in case of power outages.  The generator was sized large enough to provide basics during power outages.  There will be hot and cold running water, limited lights, internet service but no air conditioning if there should be an outage during your stay.

As a lover of the outdoors, the owner created a north and south patio and a screened porch with a fireplace to guarantee that if the weather was at all conducive, there was a good place to enjoy it close to the house.  The driveway and lawn are very flat and well compacted making it relatively easy to get around in a wheelchair.  There are a multitude of gardens and bird life to see right around the house and barn and there are always horses to look at as they ride through woods between dressage lessons and trail rides.

There are bike paths nearby and there is a local bus transportation service that has a lift and is completely wheelchair accessible.  For a wheelchair accessible day at the beach, State Beach between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown has a bike path, handicap parking, wooden walkways down to the beach and bridges filled with wet, jumping kids.  All three down island towns are pretty good on accessibility, especially Oak Bluffs.  Overall, Martha's Vineyard is a great place for an accessible vacation and The Stoney Hill Road House is the most accessible vacation rental home in America.  Believe it.
